Ready or not, here we come!

We're in West Virginia, listening to the Partridge Family sing about "Point me in the direction of Albuquerque." It's a bit too late for that map entry. (David Cassidy was my main heart throb when I was about 12. Carrie says Bobby Sherman was hers.)

I searched for two weeks for the perfect ring to buy. I wanted an authentic Native American created treasure that I could afford. I found my ring in Durango, CO. It's sterling silver with an oval charolite stone. Charolite is purple (shocker, I know!) with white shadows. Today I lost my ring. Carrie called the hotel in Kentucky to ask if they'd found it. They didn't find it. I was so upset. St. Anthony was summoned - again. Carrie just found my ring in the black hole between the seat and the console! I'm so happy!

Yesterday, I drove for at least 15 minutes through "flat rock" rain like you couldn't believe. (My mom always said rain like that is like a cow peeing on a flat rock!) There was so much lightning and the heaviest rain I've ever driven in. I was so tense by the time my them was over.

We just passed five really long flat bed trucks transporting blades of the huge wind mills from the wind farms we passed in Kansas. Mammoth! I think wind power is such a great solution.

We are both ready to snuggle up in our own beds tonight after we get caught up with our families. Alaiyna learned to crawl while we have been gone. I can't wait to watch!

(Ewwwwww! Not ANOTHER dead skunk!)

Thanks for all your well-wishes, funny comments, prayers and support as we've shared our wacky adventure!

The Last Night

So this is our last hotel for the trip.  We are watching Chopped on the Food Network and sipping Margaritas in our jammies.  Next door to our hotel is a Hollywood Hustlers store...anyone need us to pick up something for you?

We spent last night in Columbia, MO.  We were in a La Quinta that left something to be desired!  (No towels, no WiFi, and a moldy ice bucket...ick!)  We vote for Comfort Inn (the best breakfasts).

Today we drove a couple hours to St. Louis to check out the arch.  OMG, it was hot and muggy and just plain gross!  After all those days without humidity, it was like a slap in the face!  We were not perspiring, glowing or even sweating...we were dripping!  GROSS!!!  It was really pretty from the outside but we weren't really impressed about the ride to the top (in a pod that was on the claustrophobic side...thought I was headed for the moon) and the view.  Of course we haven't a clue as to what we were looking at except the Mississippi River!  When we got back to the ground the weather had changed to a crazy mix of big fluffy clouds that looked like they were ready to burst.

Lori had done some investigating restaurants for lunch.  She found Pappy's Smokehouse for BBQ.  We had both seen it on the Food Network and were excited to visit!  We had the choice confirmed by the State Park Rangers and followed Google Navigator to Pappy's.   Holy Cow (or pig?) it was great BBQ.  If you ever are in St. Louis, you have to go!  We had ribs, brisket, green beans, beans and french fried sweet potatoes between the two of us.  We were in a food coma!  yummy!  (We didn't need dinner!)

Those clouds turned into a down pour of Noah proportions!  Lori was stuck driving through the crazy lightening and deluge.  I took over the driving at Santa Clause, Indiana - yes, we had to drive through!  It rained most of the way to Lexington, Kentucky and we look forward to joining our families tomorrow night!

Oh...and the best news of the day - Mom is home and doing well (except her hair - she says it looks like shit!)

Kansas

Well, we drove across Kansas today.  Made it half way through Missouri.  Not too eventful!

Rocky Mountain High...John Denver Anyone????

We are presently driving in Colorado…we have left the mountains and are in the flat lands and they are FLAT!  We see lots of horses and cattle.

The last Lori wrote was our drive out of Arizona.  Do not mention Four Corners to me!  I’ve changed the name to F-in Four Corners!  I didn’t want to go there anyway!  Grrrrrr

We drove until we found a Casino…we thought we could get a cheap dinner.  It was probably the worst meal we’ve had on our trip.  It wasn’t horrible but nothing to write home about - so why am I writing????  Who knows!  We drove on to Cortez, Colorado where we unhappily realized that we had a low tire.  After driving around for a service station with air to fill that sucker up,we headed to Durango.  We found a nice Best Western (no thanks to Hotel.com who said that there was only one room with a double bed - I like Lori a lot - but not that much!).

Saturday we forced ourselves out of bed at 6:30 (after checking in at midnight - yawn!) to grab breakfast and head for the Durango-Silverton Railroad where we enjoyed the ride through the gorge cut by the Animas River to the historic city of Silverton.  What a fantastic ride that was…the words glorious, stupendous, marvelous, awesome, Holy Cow! don’t come close to describing the ride!  We had a great lunch at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant called Handlebar Mustache (I know what the Glenn Dale folks are thinking about!)  We didn’t have much time to check out the town (next time I’m spending a couple days up there!).  We hopped on a van that took us back to Durango.  The van driver told us tales of the area.  I can’t remember any of them right now!  I was worried that that after the train ride, that this wouldn’t be much fun but the view was spectacular!  He took us to the company headquarters for our raft ride!  Yes, we took an awesome ride down the Animas River!  Much of the river was calm but we had up to 3 rapids…enough to have a bit of fun without scaring the crap out of us.  It was fantastic!  We highly recommend rafting!  I was envious of the kayakers out there.  I’m ready to try river kayaking!

(Oh, Lordy!  Lori is waving at Cowboys!)

We returned to the car dying of thirst!  We also had a tire dying of air!  Yikes 12 pounds   We drove across the street to fill it up - then to Sonic for slushes - then to Wal-Mart for tire repair.  The 10 minute procedure was going to take 1.5 hours!  What????  We were hot, tired, hungry and maybe a bit grumpy!  So, we left the car and walked the 3 miles (this could be a slight exaggeration) it took to get from one end of Wal-Mart to the other…it was the biggest Wal-Mart we’d ever seen!  We found a shop for wine that we needed to go with our pizza dinner, we planned to order to have delivered to the room, and a spa to have our toes done (this trip hasn’t done our toes any favors).  I could have fallen asleep in that massage chair!  The car wasn’t ready when we got back but only had a few more minutes to wait.

We went back to the room and enjoyed our wine and pizza watching HGTV and working on the blog.  AND a great night’s sleep!  We didn’t get up until 9:00!  Lazy

Today we have wandered through a few shops in Durango, stood on a “hill” that was 11,700 ft high right on the Continental Divide, stood in snow, seen a small herd of buffalo (farmed but we’ll take it), driven out the magnificent Rockies while listening to John Denver, and now we continue to drive to lower elevations (Rocky Ford is only 4000 something).

Goodbye Flagstaff, July 7 and 8

Thursday was a laundry and oil change day. We also took another drive past Lake Mary to Mormon Lake to see eagles. The weather didn't cooperate. It was fun to see the clouds boil, the sky turn angry and see the lightning streak, but we did not see any eagles. It was still a fun drive. One of my most treasured experiences on our wacky adventure is getting to know Carrie's dad, Dick. He is funny and goofy and smart and a great person. We had a lot of fun doing exciting things like driving and sightseeing as well as mundane things like fixing dinner and washing dishes. We especially had tons of fun teasing each other.

We got a call from Carol at the hospital, finding out that the doctors were working on transferring her to Tucson. Within two hours, she was scheduled to leave as soon as the ambulance got there for her. We visited Carol before she was wheeled off to the ambulance and home to Tucson, showed her our elk pictures and said goodbye. Carrie was sad to be separated from her mom and I won't be surprised if she flies to Tucson later in the summer. We began making plans to leave on Friday morning.

Dick left Flagstaff by car on Friday at the crack of dawn. He was hyper and ready to get home! It was sad to say goodbye. (It's always nice to know that you have made a lifetime friend.) We left a short time later and headed north. We stopped at Cameron, which is a Native American trading post and tourist trap. The Gallery of Fine Art at Cameron is fantastic! Beautiful jewelry, blankets, bead work, baskets, pottery, you name it. I would highly recommend a visit to the Gallery if you are ever in Cameron.

From there, we took off toward the east. We stopped at "Dinosaur Tracks" where local Navajos gave walking tours of a prehistoric site of dinosaur fossils. Our tour guide was pretty cute. She used a sports water bottle to outline the tracks and prints we were seeing. When you see our pictures (eventually), you will see her water outlines. Weird.

We drove from there to Monument Valley. I don't have the vocabulary to describe Monument Valley. I will give it a go. When we got there, the weather was iffy. There was a storm brewing on three sides of us and there was a "haboob" on the fourth side. (A haboob is a dust storm that only occurs in the Sahara Desert and in Arizona. There was a huge haboob in Phoenix last week.) Carrie took me on a driving tour around the monuments, driving on the most rugged road I have probably ever been on. I am so impressed with her Toyota Highlander and her driving! We stopped, got out and spent a long time at Artist's Point. Carrie said it should be renamed Carrie's Point. It's her favorite vantage point. I can understand her point of view, so to speak. I really don't have the words to describe how incredibly gorgeous Monument Valley is from this perspective. She said she'd never been there when the sky wasn't clear and blue. The sky was stunning because it was blue and sunny here and there, gray and boiling in other places, and it was constantly changing. We did tree pose in the shadows of the monuments. You can't beat that!

We drove on and on from there, heading toward "Four Corners." We got there just as the sun was setting, at 8:15, only to find out that the Navajos close the Four Corners Marker area at 8. There was a bit of foul language in our car. We made our way to Durango, Colorado by midnight. We have quite an adventure planned for Durango. Stay tuned!!

Lake Mary, Wednesday, July 6

So, Carrie has been talking about seeing elk in the Flagstaff area for weeks. We hadn't seen any in the 10 or so days we'd been in Flag, so we decided to make a specific drive for the purpose of seeing elk. I did a little research and found out that Lake Mary is a good place to see them.

When Carrie, Dick and I were a few miles before Lake Mary, we saw cars pulled onto the shoulder and then we saw them!! Elk! There were three elk up pretty close to the road and about six or eight farther back in some trees. We took pictures and pinched ourselves and giggled and high-fived each other.

We weren't ready to go back "home" yet, so we continued down the road to Lake Mary. There is "lower" Lake Mary, which was a totally dry, grassy lake bed and "upper" Lake Mary, which had lots of water and boaters. We now know that we don't really give a rip about "upper." We stopped at "lower" and saw a herd of elk that was probably 50 in number. I think they were probably 100 yards from us. We thought we'd been thrilled before, but now we were ecstatic! The elk were grazing and making strange squawking noises that we first thought were birds.

Then, we drove on and saw another herd that must have had between 100 and 150 elk! I thought I was going to levitate right off the face of the earth! It was almost completely dark by then, but I kept insisting on trying to photograph them. My pictures look like crap, so I tried to imprint the sight permanently on my retinae. There were young elk that were playing with each other, cavorting and hopping and running like they were playing tag. It was breath-taking to watch. We finally left when we couldn't see each other, let alone the elk. We went out to dinner and bored the server with our pictures, but he could tell we were excited, so he played along with us. It was a great experience that we won't forget.

Pacemaker????

I'm going to post about my mom and I'll let Lori post about what we've been doing.  She is way better at the details...my brain is fried!

Mom has a pacemaker!  Crazy, I know!  Let's see...today is Saturday...We left AZ on Friday and Mom left Flagstaff on Thursday.  Thursday afternoon she was told that if insurance would pay, then she would be transferred to Tucson University Hospital where there is an electrophysiocardiologist (I'm sure that this is spelled wrong!).  Basically this is a heart electrician.  So within a couple hours, she was in an ambulance headed for Tucson!  Dad, Lori and I were left with our heads spinning.  We had to figure out what to do next!  Lori and I hadn't even looked at the map to make the final decisions about the ride home!

I called Mom Friday morning to find out how the trip went and she said it was long (especially trying to use a bed pan in the ambulance!).  AND she said that they were putting a pacemaker in that afternoon.  Mom's only concern was Dad arriving in time!  Not a problem!

I've talked with her a couple of times.  She is doing really well.  They are monitoring the pacemaker over the weekend and she'll probably go home on Tuesday!

We feel pretty blessed that many of mom's prior problems have been fixed!  YEAH!  She is doing well!

Thanks for all the prayers!  Carrie

PS...Dad is doing really well too!

Internet, anyone?

Wednesday in Flagstaff: It's a lovely, cool evening in Flagstaff, AZ. The afternoon storms have been interesting the last three days. The mountains almost disappear in the overcast and the thunder booms. This evening, it's all clear. We are going in search of elk later this evening before dark. We hope to see elk, pronghorn antelope, bison and eagles in a wildlife sanctuary a few miles from here.

The place we are staying while Carol is hospitalized is a beautiful, rustic "house" like a ski lodge with amenities out the wazoo, but their internet has been down for the whole time we've been there. I am currently sitting in the parking lot at the hospital using their wifi. Carol continues to need care, so we are staying put. As Carrie's husband, Paul, said, "Flagstaff is a tough place to be stranded!" It is beautiful here.

I've been to the Lowell Observatory to see the telescopes that Purcival Lowell used to study Mars in the 1920's and the telescope that was used to discover Pluto. We haven't been back there at night to see for ourselves. Maybe we'll do that tonight.

We've been shopping in the historical downtown. It is filled with fun shops and artsy galleries. On Saturday, I went to a 4th of July arts and crafts fair in a park downtown. I found a wonderful potter who was so happy to tell a few of us about her "seconds" in back of her table. My mom was the queen of potter's seconds! I bought a couple pieces for a "steal!"

Later on Saturday, Carrie, Dick and I went to the Northern Arizona Museum for a Hopi Indian festival. It was just fantastic! The museum looked to be very interesting in and of itself, but it was overtaken with native artists selling jewelry, pottery, kachinas, blown glass and fry bread! It was so fun! Dick bought Carol a kachina and Carrie learned every detail of its story. Ask her!

On Sunday (maybe?) after lunch, Carrie and I drove to the Grand Canyon. It's about an hour and a half from Flagstaff and it was raining on the way, which made for interesting sights in the desert. We didn't see any wildlife, though. Well, that's not exactly true. Right before we entered the national park, we stopped to take a picture with Smoky Bear at the forest service drive! When we got there, the rain was stopped at the rim, but we could see the rain and the virga across the canyon. It was really something beautiful to see. We did some shopping and lots of gawking, then drove to a market and picked up a picnic for dinner. We drove around to the east side/end of the canyon to watch the sun set. Ahhhhhh.

Monday, I went in search of a golf course that is ranked in the top 100 courses in the U.S. I found it, but was not allowed in. They don't accept human money, only member tokens. (That experience was reminiscent of when Mom, Dad and I went to Burning Tree in the '80s and Mom was asked to leave because it was "men only." Jerks.) Later, we took a drive out into the hinterlands to find the Flagstaff Arboretum. It was a fun drive and a pretty little arboretum. Nothing grand like the National Arboretum. There were FIR TREES, so I was very happy about that. We watched the Capitol Fourth and the Boston Pops 4th of July fireworks on t.v. and sang Lee Greenwood to each other.

Yesterday, Carrie and I drove to Jerome, through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. Oh, my goodness! I already knew I loved Sedona, but Oak Creek Canyon was just as fantastic! We stopped at Slide Rock and waded and communed with lots of lizards. No snakes, thank you, God! In Sedona, we went to the earth energy vortex at the airport mesa and soaked in some healing and grounding. Then, Carrie and I climbed to the top of this huge rock and got some panoramic photos. Breathtaking. (Did I tell you I love Sedona?)

From there, we drove to Jerome, which is a town that once was home to a copper mine. Now, it is a fun old west kind of town in the mountains filled with fun shops, wineries (yes, we did a tasting), and gorgeous views of the desert and mountains. The first shop we stopped in, Carrie walked right over to a pair of turquoise earrings that she loved. The clerk said he was from Gaithersburg, Maryland! This has not been unusual for us this trip. Carrie told herself that she was going to buy the earrings if they were less than $150. (They are huge pieces of green turquoise.) She got them for $50-something!

We headed back to Sedona so we could eat at JAVELINA CANTINA!!!! This is one of Carrie's favorite restaurants and we have talked and talked about when we go there together. It was so fun and the food was great! We had a visitor sit at our table with us. He was a rather large, injured cockroach on the floor near our feet. Carrie kept her feet up on my side of the booth. I sat on my legs. The wait staff was horrified when we told them about him as we left. We kinda bonded with him.

We went into a few shops in the area, one in which Carrie said she felt "drawn." Interestingly enough, there was pottery in the shop created by my mother's favorite potters from Bend, Oregon. Maybe Carrie was channeling Mom for me. A storm broke out over the red rocks of Sedona and I tried to catch a photo of the lightning, but of course was unable to catch it. Carrie scurried into her favorite Hopi jewelry shop and bought herself a birthday bracelet to join her other Hopi jewels. We came back to Flag, visited Carol and then I fell into bed. Did I tell you I LOVE Sedona?

Still in Flagstaff!

Our adventure continues...only we haven't gone very far.  We have moved from the timeshare to a place called the Taylor House for families of patients.  It's lovely and we are so glad to have it!  Mom is still not ready to go home but after a few days in ICU, she is able to regulate all her electrolytes on her own now - REALLY GOOD NEWS.  She has had problems with her heart that they are now working at regulating so that's what we are doing now.

Lori continues to take really good care of us.  :-)

Please continue prayers so mom can get home!  (us too)

Our adventure is improving!

I couldn't pass on the great news yesterday due to difficulty with wi-fi and I just don't have the patience to write a lengthy email w my phone!

Mom's cognitive abilities are WAY better!  She isn't in her own little obsessive world and she knows who we are and what is happening in the world...yahoo!

We are waiting for her heart rythms to get where they need to be and she should move to a telemetry floor (Heart stuff) to continue monitering things.  We are out of the woods on most of the electrolytes but are working on the heart stuff.

Her catheter has been removed and she is peeing well, eating well etc.  Good stuff!!!  (Of course, that means that she is tired from getting up at night...but moving is good too...)

Dad, Lori and I are trying to make good use of her nap time.  We went to a Hopi Arts and Craft Festival yesterday.  That was fun.  The day before we went to the Arboritum and had a nice walk amongst the flora (I even enjoyed that).  Lori continues to take great care of us.  She put a pot roast in a crockpot so that was great last night!  We sat outside of the Taylor house sneaking a "snort" and enjoying the lovely dinner!

The night before, we grabbed dinner at Safeway (grab and go) and drove up to Sunset Crater to watch the end of the sunset (we kind of got a late start).  We sat back, relaxed with a water bottle filled with vino and ate our salad/sandwiches!  It was really nice!

Lori and I are going to go someplace this afternoon...she gets to decide!  We will leave Dad to his own devices!  He might like some time on his own!  AND he has left over pot roast!

Thanks again for all the prayers and support you all provide.  We are surely blessed to have the family and friends we have!

Love and tons of hugs to you all!  Carrie, Dick and Carol

More Mom

Dear Ones,

We spent the day in the ICU with Mom/Carol waiting for the ICU doc to give us the scoop on Mom/Carol’s condition.  He wasn’t able to meet with us until 5:30 and stayed with us for over an hour explaining the diagnosis by her Tucson cardiologist and why the cardiologist made that diagnosis and what he really thought the diagnosis was.  Based on the change of altitude and many other things that we just can’t explain in a concise manner, her body stressed.

Good news:  she is making headway.  Her brain has not been affected by the seizure or anything else.  Her sodium level is rising.  While she spent the morning fiddling with tissues, she stopped long enough to eat a good lunch and sleep this afternoon. She woke up without the fiddling (which is good because it was making us a bit nuts).  Her cognition is still a bit off but is far better than yesterday!  She is still a bit obsessed with some quilts she has in her mind.

We will be here for 4-6 more days, with the next 2 in the ICU, where the Doc feels she will get a lot of deserved attention.  We have a wonderful facility to stay - the Taylor House (like a Ronald McDonald House), now that the timeshare comes to an end tomorrow morning. We stopped by this evening and it’s lovely!

Well, Lori is bringing home dinner so we’d better set the table!  (She’s been a blessing, that’s for sure!)

Holy Crap!

Mom...

Yesterday she ended up in the ICU because she seized (twice).  Scared the living daylights out of Dad and me.  The entire hospital staff ended up in the room within a few seconds.  The worst part was the chest compressions we were "privileged" to watch.  Dad and I stayed out of the way until a nurse was able to escort us through the maze of docs, nurses, techs etc.  I, in my usual style of trying to add humor to the moment, sent mom's food tray across the path into the room.  It gave me something to do to keep me from having my own heart issue!

Mom is still not well.  Her cognitive faculties suck.  She is obsessed with making 3 quilts for Anne and Gordon (b & s-i-l) because she says that Anne's eyes are bad...weird.  Her quilts are made with tissues.  It's difficult to watch.  She tries to chat and even said that she'll talk to me when the words she wants work better.  So there are some things that aren't firing well in that brain of hers.

She is so well taken care of here.  The staff is so gosh darned nice!  We feel so good about the people and the care!  Blessing for sure!

Lori is off gallivanting through Flagstaff on her own.  There are plenty of shops and fun places to keep her busy!

Paul's dad turns 95 today! He has been horribly ill and it improving steadily!  Yeah!

Lots of love to our readers.  We can feel the Holy Spirit working through you!  Keep it up!!!!  (please)

PS  please add a little prayer to St. Anthony to locate my phone!

Priorities

Carrie's mom is still in the hospital. They aren't ready to discharge her yet and Carrie's dad is working to get her discharged from the hospital in Flagstaff so that he can take her to the hospital in their town of Oro Valley, near Tucson. Carrie and her dad, Dick, are visiting mom, Carol, now. I decided that they'd be more comfortable visiting with her without me hanging around.

I'm relaxing at the condo, contemplating going over to the pool. I imagine my sunblock is not going to save me from a sunburn, which is kind of motivating in itself. I only tan if I get burned in the process. (I can hear my Aunt Wendy chewing me out now.) I finished my book last night and am ready to start a new one. I love Dan Brown books. "The Lost Symbol" did not disappoint. Fantastic! I'm getting ready to start "Traveling with Pomegranates," by Sue Monk Kidd. She's the author of "The Secret Life of Bees," which I loved. We'll see how this one is.

We've put our sightseeing on hold while Carol is in the hospital. Her health is the priority right now. We want to be near so that visits are easy and we are available if need be. If we get the chance, our plan is to go to Jerome, Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock. We'd better check and see if there is any water at Slide Rock, though. My guess is that there is not water! It's dry as a bone around here.

Thank you all so much for your prayers, Reiki, healing thoughts, and energy.

Somethings DO suck

Mom and Dad joined us yesterday afternoon and mom was a mess.  Her ability to communicate was severely impaired. After re-hydrating and a snack she was much better but once we were all headed to bed to enjoy our novels, she really was messed up.  Her cognition was severely lacking.  With the help of Lori's sister's advice (she is a pharmacist), we headed for the ER.  It has been determined that her electrolytes were extremely low.  After a bolus of saline etc, she was almost normal (whatever that is).  She spent the night in the hospital and is so much better.  She is better than I've seen here in a while!  Crazy!  The aren't thrilled that her electrolyte levels aren't returning to normal as fast as they'd like so she will spend the night again tonight.  She is so mad that she is stuck in a hospital in Flagstaff on my birthday!  Well I understand that but I'm so relieved that she isn't stroking out on us that I can overlook that fact!

Lori, Dad, and I visited mom this morning then we did a quick run through of Downtown Flagstaff.  We ate lunch (beer and margaritas were involved), therefore we came back to the townhouse for naps!  We will head back out to visit with mom and eat dinner at a burger joint called Bunhuggers - yummy!  I'm hoping for a drive to Sunset Crater to - get this - watch the sunset!

Keep Mom (and Dad too) in your prayers!  We love the comments from our friends!

This does not suck...

We are sitting on the deck at Carrie and Paul's timeshare. We each have two chairs, one for our bottoms and one for our feet. There's a table between us with coffee, cold pizza, water, fresh peaches, chocolate, Carrie's laptop and our books. Neither of us are dressed and we may or may not get out of our jammies. Behind the condos across the street are the San Francisco Peaks. Humphrey's Peak is over 12,000 feet and has a summer chairlift adventure. I hope we do that this week. Flagstaff is about an hour and a half from the Grand Canyon. Carrie wants us to watch the sun set over the canyon, so we brought lawn chairs to do so. I'm really looking forward to that. She showed me on the Flagstaff map where they have funky shops with tie dyes and Birkenstocks. We are so going there. The historic shops look fun, too. Carrie's parents are on the way to join us. They are so cute! I think Carrie's dad may be as ornery as my dad! Carrie's mom wants to go to a local museum about local Native American tribes. Carrie's birthday is tomorrow, so we are going to a local brew pub for dinner.

Carrie's mom is an accomplished quilter, as is Carrie. Her parents house in Tucson is so cool. It is Spanish style, with high ceilings, tile floors and southwestern decor. Carrie's mom's quilts are on display in nearly every room and they are spectacular! There is one on the wall in the guest bedroom that is about 8 feet in diameter. It's their Christmas tree skirt. Gorgeous! The landscaping at their house is truly desert inspired. Cactus, bougainvillia and Mexican bird of paradise make a beautiful statement. The most beautiful statement is the pool. I could have stayed there for a couple hours, but Carrie says I would have been fried. I might not have minded being fried in that manner.

Christa says I need to include a few of our humorous adventures. We have had a couple, but we've mostly been in the car, so that doesn't lend itself to too many funnies. I did leave my glasses in Carrie's brother, Rick's, backseat in Deming, New Mexico and didn't discovery it until we were about 50 miles on down the road. We had to turn around and go back to get them. I could have worn my prescription sunglasses for two or three days until we could have gotten them by next day mail, but that would have been a pain. Fortunately, Rick was fantastic and agreed to drive toward us to meet us half way. It was great to meet Rick and his wife, Sharon! I know that wasn't such a funny story, but I think Carrie will hold it over my head. She was so excited to get to her parents in Tucson and I held us up at least an hour and a half with going back to meet Rick. I could hear my dad's voice in my head. "Lor-ri. Think!" I also sprayed myself in the face with Carrie's "camelback" water bottle yesterday. She got a kick out of that.

It feels weird to be at our destination and have nothing on the agenda, but it is very, very relaxing. Carrie went to take a nap. I'm reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Have a relaxing day, whatever you may be doing!

Pizza is Ordered, The Wine is Poured

So we have had a wonderful couple of days!  We are now in Flagstaff and I am just reveling in the smell of pine, the mountains all around and the cooler temperatures. We have driven through bayou, ranch land, desert, scrub and forest.  I LOVE IT!!!!!
Yesterday I visited our home and the school from my elementary days.  Lori forced me (not that she would have done that in her girlhood home!) knock on the door.  No one was there but we stood around the yard like stalkers for a while.  Then over to the elementary school where I expected to smell mimeo fluid!  Lori had to listen to me point to things and tell what we did there and who was there and all that stuff that zings back into your brain when you start remembering.
We drove down the main drag and I had to choose between 2 of my favorite restaurants of those days:  Smitty's BBQ or Leos.  We went for Leos and enjoyed yummy Mexican food and more talking about the stuff I did as a kid.  (Poor Lori...)

Next stop was Deming, NM where my brother and sister-in-law are living.  Rick is an electrician who is installing solar panels in different sites around NM.  He and Sharon are living like nomads and enjoying every minute of it!  The solar site was really cool!  I'm so proud of him!!!

Next stop was Tucson where my parents live.  We enjoyed a great nights sleep and a soak in their pool this morning.  We ate more Mexican food at one of our favorite dives called Nico's!  Super yummy!!

The pizza should be here shortly and we will pour another glass of wine and zonk out!  Who knows what tomorrow will bring?  (Actually, I do...my mom and dad will join us for a couple night!  yeah!)

Lavender Fields Forever

So much for butchering John Lennon's lyrics. We left NOLA this morning about 8:30, after we had our biegnets and chickory cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde. Biegnets taste like funnel cake and are drowning in powdered sugar. Mmmm. We drove through the bayous of Louisiana from NOLA, through Baton Rouge, and on into Texas. I ate at my first ever Sonic. It was delish! (Today was so not a low carb, low cal day.) Our plan was to drive to Fredericksburg, TX and visit a winery and lavender farm. Unfortunately, everything in Fredericksburg closes at 6 and we didn't get there until 6:30 or so. Fredericksburg is a little town with Old West and German influences. We did some window shopping and a great pit barbecue dinner. On our way into town, we were muttering about missing the winery and the lavender (it isn't even in blooming season), when Carrie said, "Don't worry, something will happen to make this interesting." Literally seconds later, we saw a homestead with three CAMELS in the field in front. Now, that's interesting! Random.

Beware of Hurricanes...

We had a sweltering, but fun day in NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) yesterday! We were able to book an historic hotel right in the French Quarter and walk to everything for $80 a night! We got there around 11 a.m. and checked in at the French Market Inn. Our room was in the farthest building of a group of beautiful red brick buildings connected by a quaint, winding courtyard with interesting fountains. (A nice, yellow tabby cat lives in the courtyard. Meow!) We then made our way down to Central Grocery Co. for a muffuletta. A muffuletta, in case you don't know, is an Italian sandwich made with muffuletta bread, lots of Italian cold cuts and "olive salad." Olive salad is made of olive oil (lots) and three different kinds of olives and marinated veggies. I was a little dubious of the salad in my sandwich, but it was fabulous. The sandwich was probably big enough for four people, but Carrie and I split it. We ate it alongside the Mississippi River as we watched the Natchez paddle wheel river boat slide on by. The wind was lovely as the humidity was killer. We took a mule-drawn carriage tour of the French Quarter and the downtown cemetery. We were both scratching our heads at the need for a tour of the cemetery, but it was so cool! They have done all kinds of shoring up of crypts to protect them from rising water over the years. The crypts are huge and crammed in very close together. We saw the most famous voodoo queen's crypt, which was covered by triple x's and had lots of offerings and a voodoo doll. We saw many of the NOLA-specific homes, such as the double shotgun homes and the camel back homes. (Look it up, say our mothers.) The ironwork on the balconies is one of my favorite parts of the French Quarter. We wandered through lots of shops and watched a brass band made up of young men who were having a great time entertaining people in Jackson Square. They also made a freaking haul in tips. We wandered to Bourbon Street as the sun was setting and saw the beginnings of the evening's shenanigans. Carrie and I had decided to have a Hurricane (a type of a Rum Runner, kinda) and dinner at Pat O'Brians. When we got there, we went into the Dueling Piano bar and got our huge drinks and asked for a dinner menu. No food was served in the bar. By the time we finished our drinks and heard the song I had requested, one of us was more than a little tipsy. Carrie walked and I staggered into the restaurant, we both ordered shrimp entrees that were heavenly - and we each had another Hurricane. I heard earlier in the day that they are called "hurricanes" because, after you drink one, you feel as if you brain has been in a hurricane. That would be a "no shit, Sherlock" situation. We had a great time. Poor Carrie had to steer me back to our room. Boy, they were good!

Bourbon Street

Day 2 Begins!

Why can't ACs in hotels either run the fan continuously or be quieter???  Ok, I know that I should just be happy for a working AC but this stupid thing goes on and off every few minutes.  I just counted and in the last 5 minutes, it has gone off and on 3 times!  Grummble, grummmmmble...

So, this is the day we head for New Orleans!  We are so stoked!!!  We hope to find a hotel in the French Quarter so it's all walking.  I remember going through NO when I was 12.  Which means that it was "stupid."  I've been back since but really don't remember too much about it.  Ben went with us the last time but he was in a stroller!  I'm thinking this will be a different experience!  :-)

Time to pack up the car, top off the coffee and move on out!

Day 1 Ends

We are in a La Quinta in Meridian, Mississippi.  We had a great day of driving.  The weather was great most of the time but there were some huge thunderstorms north of Birmingham.

We ate breakfast and lunch in the car but stopped for a great McDonald's salad (their Asian salad is great!).

We listened to an eclectic mix of tunes from a Christmas song to the Beatles to CSN with a musical thrown in.  We listened to Janet Evanovich's newest best seller and played Akinator on the cell phones.

Tomorrow morning we'll head for New Orleans and spend the day in the French Quarter!  If you have any restaurants or places you think we HAVE to visit, let us hear from you!

Alabama

Stopped to visit Julia, my bestest mother-in-law, and her family...her brother, her parents and other long departed angels!

Gas stop

Fill er up! Lori is trying out the rockers.  It's a beautiful day for driving.

Day 1

It's Wednesday morning, the car is packed.  I'm waiting for the coffee to finish brewing and I'll be ready to say good-bye to my boys.  I have been looking forward to this trip for so long and yesterday it dawned on me that I might actually miss them!  sigh....  Will they eat right (not that they do when I'm home), will they water my tomatoes and jalapenos (probably not), will the house be a bigger mess than it is now (undoubtedly), will they miss me????  maybe :-)
So off I go to pick up Lori!

What to read? What to eat?

Carrie and I are going to the library today to have our first argument. (Just kidding! That was for Laura who thinks we are going to have lots of arguments.) We are in search of the perfect audio books to keep us entertained while we drive. We like similar books, but I hope the library has some titles we are interested in. I was there the other day and was less than inspired by the audio collection. I'm thinking we may want to head to the younger reader section, since we both love children's fiction. (That could be because we both act like we're 12 years old. We're gonna have so much fun on this trip!!!) Oh, yeah! I ordered the audio version of the Janet Evanovich book that comes out on Tuesday. It'll be here before we leave!! Sweet!

We have also been throwing ideas back and forth about what to snack on in the car. Carrie's been doing Weight Watchers and I've been doing "The Belly Fat Cure." (For the last week, I've been doing the "eat everything in sight" cure. I've been sick, you know.) I'll be contributing the high protein, low carb, low sugar snacks and Carrie will be providing the low cal snacks. We're thinking lots of nuts (for the nuts), baked chips, dark chocolate from Trader Joe's with no sugar (sooo good!), veggies and dried fruit. And coffee out the butt. If anybody has some brilliant suggestions, we'd love to hear them!

The Set Up

So, Lori and I are headed out on Wednesday for Flagstaff.  We are getting aps on our phones so that we can find cheap gas, cheap hotels, and maps!  We will do our best to let anyone interested know where we are and what we are doing.  We are really excited!
